The Hong Kong Pavilion at the British Empire Exhibition 1924

The starting point for this project was the Hong Kong Pavillion at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924. It highlighted Chinese link to the Empire via Hong Kong.

The impact of Empire in East Asia is often overlooked, or seen as a success story, because of the relative economic success of Hong Kong and Singapore.

People of Chinese heritage and Chinese food and culture are a significant part of modern British life remain a low key presence and there is little record of the contribution of this community in the Brent Archives today.

This project seeks to address this through interviews, research and exploration of the people and places key to Chinese heritage in Brent.

“On The Trail of the Peking Duck!” is a research project by the SharedCity team, developed between March and October 2025 thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Brent Council - specifically the Becoming Brent fund which supports local organisations in responding to the legacy of the British Empire Exhibition.
